When does it snow in Hogsback?
The montains near Hogsback receive snow several times every winter. The village of Hogsback - particularly the higher-lying parts - may receive a good snowfall once or twice a year. The most likely months for snow are June to August, but it is impossible to predict this in advance.
What is the best time of year to see the Azaleas in their prime?
Although it differs from year to year, the Azaleas are usually at their best during the first two to three weeks of October.
I am a keen photographer. What is the best time of year for autumn colours?
You will see Hogsback's dramatic autumn colours at their best from the middle of April until the end of May each year.
Where can we get married in Hogsback?
Popular places for wedding ceremonies include St Patrick on the Hill Chapel, the Eco-Shrine, the Labyrinth at The Edge, and the Arboretum. See the "Weddings and Functions" section of this website for establishments that cater for wedding receptions and other functions.
Is it safe in Hogsback?
Hogsback has been largely free of violent crime for some time; most of the recent crime has been opportunistic or petty. Of course, it is wise to take reasonable precautions to ensure your personal safety, and not to leave valuables visible and unattended.

What is the altitude in Hogsback?
The village of Hogsback lies between 1 200 m and ....m; Tor Doone is at 1 565 m; the top of the First Hogsback is at 1 686 m; and Gaika's Kop is at 1 963 m.
Are the Hogsback mushrooms safe to eat?
Some are, and some are not safe to eat. Do not try to eat them, unless you can tell them apart.
How do we deal with the pushy "hogsellers"?
Some people offer their wares (mostly walking sticks and clay animals) for sale in Main Road. Some of them may be quite "pushy" in their manner while they try to negotiate a sale, whether you are on foot or in your car. Your best bet is to make your decision, and then be firm about it; simply walk or drive away if you decide not to buy. Do be reasonable about prices; parting with a few Rands more will make very little difference to you, but it will make a big difference to the seller. Do not give money in response to begging.
Are there Credit Card and Debit Card facilities in Hogsback?
All the Hotels, Shops and Restaurants accept payment by Credit or Debit Card. Some of the accommodation establishments do too, but it is best to confirm when you make your reservation. You will need to bring some cash to cover smaller expenses.
Can we withdraw cash in Hogsback?
There are in-store Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) at the Spar SaveMor Supermarket. Nevertheless, it would be wise to bring some cash with you.
Can we buy groceries, vegetables and fruit in Hogsback?
Yes. the Spar SaveMor Supermarket stocks a range of groceries, bread and rolls, and fresh as well as frozen foods. Contact the shop to find out when it receives fresh stocks of vegetables and fruit. Butterfly's Bistro stocks some delicatessen items. See "Shops & Services" on this website.
Can we buy fuel and oil in Hogsback?
Yes. Petrol, diesoline, lubricants, distilled water, etc. can be obtained from an outlet that is situated next to the Spar SaveMor Supermarket in Main Road. Open seven days a week, from 07h00 until 18h00. Fuel cards are accepted.
Is there a Post Office in Hogsback?
Yes. The Hogsback Post Office Agency is situated in the Spar Savemor Supermarket, Main Road. It operates on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 09h00 until 16h00. Postal code: 5721. Telephone: 045 962 1176 (ask for Post Office).
Can we buy alcoholic beverages in Hogsback?
Yes. A licensed liquor store iis situated at Woodlands in Main Road. In addition there are several licensed Pubs and Restaurants.
Is there good cell-phone reception in Hogsback?
Hogsback enjoys good cell-phone reception.
Can I access the Internet from Hogsback?
Yes. Most parts of Hogsback have a good 3G/4G signal fom Vodacom; otherwise GPRS and EDGE. Your host may have an ADSL Internet connection, and may allow you to use it. Do enquire at the time of making your reservation.
Which birds are found in Hogsback?
The bird life in Hogsback and surrounding areas can be very interesting and varied. The seasons are well represented with the different migrants coming in and the birds leaving the forests for the gardens and vice versa. Are the monkeys and baboons dangerous?
Baboons and Samango monkeys visit some of the properties in Hogsback, especially those properties that are close to the indigenous forest. Mostly, they are in search of an easy source of food. Samango monkeys have been known to take fruit from houses if doors and windows are left open. So far, baboons and monkeys have not attacked people or pets; however, keep in mind that they are wild animals and they may respond if they feel threatened. Importantly, do not feed monkeys and baboons, and do not leave out any food that may attract them.
Can we walk freely in the forest?
There are several designated hikes and walks that take you into the indigenous forests. You may also walk in the Pine Plantations, but to do this you will have to obtain a permit from Amathole Forestry Company (offices in Main Road, Hogsback). Such permits are not issued when the risk of fires is high. No camping is allowed in either the Indigenous Forests or the Pine Plantations.
Can we bring our dog?
Most properties in Hogsback are pet-friendly. Discuss this with your hosts when you book your stay. Dogwood Lodge provides accomodation for visitors' dogs while they are on holiday in Hogsback; see the "Shops & Services" section of this website. Sadly, dogs that wander off are at risk of being caught in snares set illegally by poachers. Also, keep in mind that dogs are not allowed in the Pine Plantations and the Indigenous Forests.

Why is it called Hogsback? What is a Hogsback?
Hogsback is named after the "Three Hogs" which lie to the east of the village. In geology and geomorphology, a hogback or hog's back is a long, narrow ridge or a series of hills with a narrow crest and steep slopes of nearly equal inclination on both flanks.
